Dr. Adam Davis, Professor and Head of the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois, will present an exploration of the enabling conditions needed to support specialty crops and niche markets. Drawing from his research on diversified cropping systems and agricultural risk mitigation, Davis will outline how expanding crop diversity, integrating livestock, and developing new market pathways can strengthen farm resilience and profitability. His work highlights how diversification can reduce risks related to weather, economics, weed management, and supply chain pressures while opening the door to innovative products and emerging specialty markets. Davis will also discuss ongoing initiatives—such as efforts within the Illinois Biomass Innovation Hub—that demonstrate how research, innovation, and system level diversification can create fertile ground for specialty crop growth and market expansion.
