Schools Back in Session: 5 Tips on How to Make the Most of Your Year
1) Get engaged with your major. Professors make great references for graduate school and job applications. Show them you take your studies seriously by volunteering to help with research, tutoring underclassman and joining a club within your major.
2) Meet with your adviser. Schedule regular times to meet with your adviser. Make sure you are on track to graduate on time and get tips on how to improve your grades.
3) Attend a Career Fair. Even if you are not ready to enter the workforce, attending a career fair is a great way to get interview experience and a feel for the opportunities available in your field. Dust off your resume and go see what is out there. If nothing else, you will get useful feedback for when you are seriously looking for work.
4) Start networking with alumni. The sooner you start making connections in your field or geographic region the better. They have been in your shoes as a student and will be a great resource for resume and interview tips, as well as internship opportunities.
5) Apply for an internship. Internships are a great way to get a feel for what day-to-day work in your field is like. A successful internship can evolve into full-time employment after graduation.
