Decision-Making: How Involved Are Our Producers and Hired Managers
The 2017 Census of Agriculture for the first time collected information on decision types at the farm level. Louisiana State University Agricultural Center Assistant Professor Maria Bampasidou and Graduate Research Assistant Whitney McKinzie recently examined the decision-making patterns for U.S. producers, documenting the spectrum of farm-management decisions and highlighting time as an important parameter in decision-making.
The authors examined involvement in decision-making by age-groups, shading more light in the role of the different age-cohorts in farm-management tasks and respective decision categories. They further investigated two groups, namely young producers and hired managers. With an aging producer population, the involvement of younger operators in discussions and decision-making is key for the sustainability of the farm sector guaranteeing a smoother transition into the next generation of farmers. The analysis of hired-managers shows their involvement in decision-making recognizing their contribution to the well-functioning of the farm sector.
