Farm Bill Expires on September 30

Though the farm bill expires on Sept. 30…throwing at least 100 USDA programs into limbo…
There’s no need to panic. It’s not unusual for farm bills to run out before Congress gets around to crafting, revising and passing their successors.
A new farm bill is coming…late this year, after the elections, or more likely, early in ’13.
But the expiration will stop some programs, Copyright 2012 The Washington Kiplinger Editors, Inc.

Come Join the Fun at the 21st Annual Ed Foundation Auction

Come Join the Fun at the 21st Annual Education Foundation Auction in Indianapolis, November 1, 2012. The Fun starts at 6:00 pm with the final chance to bid on the Silent Auction items. Food and entertainment will also be available during the few free moments from bidding. Come wearing  your Favorite Team’s Colors, whether it be high school, college or Pro.  Last year, we had the St Louis Cardinals adding some excitement to the evening. The Silent Auction ends at 7:00, and the Live Auction starts at 7:30 pm. Music for the evening will be provided by Jim Cerone, a DJ from the Indianapolis area. The money raised from the evening goes to the creation and rewriting of the Education Courses provided by ASFMRA. The Auctions are a great way to have fun and give back to the education we all need and hopefully learn from.

The Auction works because of  ASFMRA members’ and guests’ participation.  Have you or your Chapter thought about donating an item? The theme for the Auction is “Best of Your State”. What is your State’s best kept Secret? Is it something handcrafted like a quilt from the Pennsylvania Amish or an Amana clock from Iowa? Maybe it’s a basket full of Chocolate covered goodies from Washington State or Nuts and Wine from California? These are all items from past Auctions that have helped support the Foundation. We are always looking for items and support. Be creative, show us why we need to come and visit your state, and support the local economy.

There is one change to the Shipping of Items this year. The Auction Committee will not be able to ship any liquor/alcoholic beverages  to the buyers.    Unfortunately, the rules of commerce and shipping have caught up with us. The shipping company that we use will no longer allow us to package up our own boxes, without them looking inside, so we will no longer be able to ship alcohol. That’s not to say that we don’t want the wonderful items that have been donated in the past to not be donated again. It just means that the buyers will have to be more creative in the packing, if they are flying home. The Auction Committee will be providing bubble wrap and packing tape to help protect the bottles of wine, bourbon, and other spirits.

Please think about joining the fun by donating and bidding. Download a donation form.

See Ya in Indy!

Young Professionals Network Planning for Future
By Sara Wilson

The Young Professionals Network (YPN) Leadership team has begun holding monthly conference calls to expand outreach and activities offered to the young professionals of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

The American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers Young Professionals Network leadership team is comprised of five young professionals in the Appraisal and Farm Management sectors from across the country, along with Brian Stockman and Suzanne Gruba of the national office. The goal of the leadership team is to provide clear direction and leadership for the Young Professionals Network in the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, and to expand the Network’s activities and outreach.

During the first two conference calls, the group developed goals and activity ideas for the Young Professionals Network.   Additionally, the group formulated a mission statement. For 2013, the group will focus on developing materials and training for outreach to local colleges, universities and collegiate conferences, developing the use of the Ag Prolink tool, providing a training and education opportunity at Summer Education Week, organizing an educational fundraiser at the 2013 National Meeting of the ASFMRA and facilitating plans for member and collegiate student meet and greets at chapter or regional meetings.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Young Professionals Network, or organizing a collegiate or YPN event, please contact Executive Vice President, Brian Stockman at the national office. 303.692.1211 or bstockman@asfmra.org.
