Farm expenditures hit record $317 billion

Farm production expenditures reached a record-high $318.7 billion in 2011, a 10.2 percent increase over 2010, according to the Farm Production Expenditures 2011 summary released by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

USDA Reports 11% Rise in Value of U.S. Farmland

On August 3, USDA released a barrage of data concerning farmland values and cash rent in its annual summary. We summarize the key data in this keeper-copy issue. The state-level data on cash rents is available online only in a tediousto- navigate spreadsheet. We’ve taken the hard work out of it for you. California’s hydroelectricity production vulnerable

Kaveh Madani, former researcher at UC Riverside, says hydropower stations would generate less electricity in summer under climate warming.

California’s hydropower is vulnerable to climate change, a University of California, Riverside scientist has advised policymakers in “Our Changing Climate,” a report released July 31 by the California Natural Resources Agency and the California Energy Commission (CEC).

California Chapter Fall Meeting Offers Dairy Update Seminar and New Regulatory Course for Appraisers

The California Chapter Fall Meeting will be held October 3-5, 2012 at Wine & Roses in the heart of the Lodi, California Wine Country. As wine grape harvest will be in full swing, visitors to Lodi are sure to see harvesters in the fields and gondolas alongside the roads, filled with premium wine grapes awaiting delivery to their destined winery. It is definitely an exciting time to visit the area! The chapter is excited to offer a new course for appraisers that becomes a licensing requirement with OREA beginning January 1, 2013. Federal & California State Laws & Regulations is a 4 hours course that will be offered on October 3rd.  We will switch gears to the dairy industry on Thursday, October 4th with another new offering – the California Dairy Update: An Interactive Seminar. The seminar will include a dairy facility tour in the morning followed by lunch and then the afternoon spent in the classroom. Industry experts will speak on regulations and environmental issues facing California dairies; the impact of the drought on feed and livestock; the forecast for California dairies; current lending issues and challenges; and finally, appraisal issues in the dairy market. Vilsack Shares Insights in Cedar Rapids, IA

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack shared insights into the policy changes being implemented to address the Midwest drought with attendees at a Hertz Farm Management Landowner Seminar in Cedar Rapids, Iowa recently. The Secretary related the details of how the USDA is addressing the needs of livestock and grain farmers as the heat and lack of rainfall continue to cause economic hardships throughout the country.
