Managing Natural Disaster in Permanent Plantings
An afternoon discussion on the recent impact of ice storms, wildfires, and extreme heat and drought on the appraisal of Wine Grapes, Christmas Trees, and Crop insurance throughout Oregon and Washington. Leading permanent planting professionals sill focus on challenges faced by local farmers, real estate professionals, and appraisers and how the local real estate market is influenced in their respective industries. Recent regional natural disasters and their relevance to real estate appraisal will be covered in this three hour webinar (Zoom) program.

A morning with two farm and facility tours will include the largest regional Christmas tree farm and a recently installed Hazelnut processing facility.
Jonathan Sinn with Sinn Hazelnuts and Michael Wiesner with Wiesner Metal Fab will lead the group through the recently installed hazelnut processing facility and walk us through a hazelnuts progression from reaching the facility, running through the equipment, and leaving the site. The equipment built by Wiesner Metal Fab will be discussed in detail and Jonathan Sinn will touch on a typical day managing the facility. The tour will additionally focus on the industry advantages of operating a modern facility as well as the challenges appraisers face when attempting to value a facility of this nature in today’s market.
Bob Schaefer, General Manager, with Noble Mountain tree farms will lead a farm tour discussing tree damage caused by extreme heat and drought and how those factors have impacted real estate value. Topics covered will include long term management of plantings, how to mitigate loss, and the impact of Christmas tree and farm values in the short and long term.
The final stop will be of a unique substrate blueberry planting located outside McMinnville on Wallace Road. The site historically operated as a nursery can yard and has since been converted to an above ground blueberry farm with plants grown in a container with substrate material, extensive and efficient drip irrigation system, and shade structures. This tour will focus on the vertically integrated operation and how the rare planting style was developed with consideration on the real estate market, its valuation, and an appraisal perspective.
Also joining us during our tour is Casey Lammers, a Senior Relationship Manager for Rabo AgriFinance. Mr. Lammers will address the variety of issues lenders consider when lending and ordering appraisals on agricultural properties.
