By ASFMRA Press posted 04-28-2022 10:56 AM

For this spotlight, we're sharing a recent "Member Focus" from the Iowa Chapter of the ASFMRA. Jake Miller, AFM, has been with the Society since 2019 and earned his Accredited Farm Manager (AFM) designation in 2021. He is currently working out of Cedar Falls, Iowa, for Hertz Farm Management

Can you describe your experience and education related to the property professional field?

I grew up in Nevada, IA where I was heavily involved in FFA and 4-H. Through the opportunities with family, friends, the community and great vocational ag instructors I became heavily interested in agriculture. I graduated from Iowa State University, majoring in Ag Systems Technology. After ISU, I spent 3 years working with Syngenta Seeds Inc. in their commercial and parent soybean seed production business mainly in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska while based out of Jefferson/Carroll. In early 2011 I joined Pioneer Hi-Bred and served as an Agronomist & Field Operations Manager overseeing field activities for the Dysart, Reinbeck, and Toledo Production plants. In May of 2019 I took a step outside of my comfort zone and joined Hertz Farm Management and shortly there after became an ASFMRA member where I received my AFM in 2021.

What led you to become a chapter member of the Iowa ASFMRA Chapter?

Through colleagues and the Hertz organization it became clear to me the power of relationships the ASFMRA organization offers. Already, I have met many great individuals and can’t wait to continue to meet many more. I greatly enjoy the educational opportunities that are also a part of the ASFMRA organization.

Are there any personal background items that would be of interest to fellow chapter members?

I am an avid outdoors man. My passion is pheasant hunting, versatile dog training, and shooting sports. Also, I enjoy many activities with my two boys where I have coached soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Can you describe a couple memorable or unique experiences in your life?

I’ve been lucky enough to have many people present opportunities for me to grow professionally and for pleasure. As a young boy growing up in town and still having the opportunities to be able to become heavily involved in agriculture through showing livestock and working on farms has open doors for me. Some of my greatest memories are sharing experiences with my family & friends. I thoroughly enjoy giving my sons the opportunities to create their own accomplishments.
