When did you begin your career in agriculture? Why?I grew up on a ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. I was exposed to a more diversified farm and ranch eco-system when I studied Agricultural Economic and received my B.S. from South Dakota State University. I applied for a position for the State of South Dakota and began my career in Appraising.
I almost immediately found the challenges in evaluating properties and justifying the value of interest in the properties interesting and worthwhile.
What Ag issues are you most passionate about? Why?The accurate and reliable valuation of property and fair reporting of the compensation due the owner for their interest in the property.
What have been the most impactful changes in your industry over the past 10 years? What changes would you like to see?The desire by the users of the appraisals to have preconceived demands for ”the deal to work.” I would like to see the value of a well-documented report become respected and demanded for all public funds transactions.
Describe an Ag-related professional experience that was especially fulfilling/rewarding.The association, and teaching experiences from other professional teachers and practitioners in the field.
