All ASFMRA members are invited to submit names of individuals who are standouts in the profession. This is your Society and no one knows better than you who deserves special recognition for what they bring to both the organization and to the profession. Who are the leaders? Who stands out as the go-to person? Which of your fellow members are outstanding in their community, their profession, and their chapter?

Handmade Oak & Hickory Rocker, Weekend in NYC & More

USDA seeks nominees for Cotton Board positions
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is asking certified producer and importer organizations to nominate candidates to serve on the Cotton Board.
USDA is seeking nominees to fill eight member and eight alternate member positions for vacancies in Arizona, Georgia, Texas, and for importers with terms ending Dec. 31, 2015.

EPA pulls back farm database proposal
National Pork Producers Council
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency withdrew a proposed rule that would have required large livestock and poultry farmers to report information about their operations and undermined court decisions related to producer obligations under the Clean Water Act, a move applauded by the National Pork Producers Council.

Another Record Almond Crop Expected
California’s 2012 almond production is forecast at a record 2.10 billion meat pounds, up 5% from May’s subjective forecast, and 3% above last year’s crop. The forecast is based on 780,000 bearing acres.

New California groundwater quality regs will be costly

The other water quality regulatory shoe is dropping on California agriculture, and it could be very costly, casting a net over just about everyone who farms in the state.
Since 2003, the State Water Resources Control Board and nine regional water quality boards have focused on protecting the surface waters of the state’s 9,500 miles of rivers/streams and 513,000 acres of lakes/reservoirs from pollutants.

Mystery! The Un-Comfort Zone by Robert Evans Wilson, Jr.
The next hatbox I pulled off the top shelf of the closet nearly tipped me off the ladder. It was the weight that surprised me; it was far too heavy for just a hat. As I regained my balance, I wondered why this one weighed more than the others. I set it on the vanity and started untying the strings.
I was curious if it would reveal any secrets about my mother, although I wasn’t expecting too much. All the other hatboxes contained… well, actual hats. Women’s hats from the 1950s and 60s with velvet, lace, feathers, and fur. It was a bittersweet nostalgia trip as my family inventoried the contents of my mother’s house. She had passed away six months earlier.
