USDA expands credit access for farmers

USDA has made substantial, year-over-year gains in expanding credit opportunities for farmers and ranchers across the United States. The increase in farm and operating loans has helped improve farmer and rancher productivity, launched new start-up operations, and ensured opportunities in agriculture for many more Americans. With expanded access to credit, USDA is helping a new generation of farmers sustain and build upon what is now the most productive period in history for American agriculture. To that end, Vilsack announced the Department is seeking comments on a new microloan program to help small and family operations progress through their start-up years with needed resources, while building capacity, increasing equity, and eventually graduating to commercial credit.

New techniques for Rural Appraisers

Do you have a unique appraisal experience you’d like to share? Here is the perfect opportunity!

As a society, we all benefit when we share our experiences. Picking up just one new idea can be invaluable. That’s the concept behind RAPID FIRE – a growing Session at the ASFMRA Annual Meeting that has become so popular it was expanded from a half to a full day!

The Rapid Fire Sessions were started 3 years ago as mini-seminars at the ASFMRA Annual Meeting on varied appraisal topics. The goal…the more diverse, the better! This past year we had topics including equine riding facilities, mining and minerals, the conservation easement debacle in Colorado, water shares, large fruit facilities, and wind rights. What’s in your portfolio that might raise an eyebrow or two?

This year, Rapid Fire will be on Wednesday, October 31st from 7:30 am -2:30 pm as part of AgroNomics – Vision 2013 and the ASFMRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. Presentations range from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the topic and the content.

Please consider sharing your experience as a Rapid Fire presenter. This is a great opportunity to share knowledge with your peers, give something back to the Society, and gain exposure for your area and a unique project that you’ve encountered. And as you will see in this session, learning truly can be fun!

Are your Preferences and Disciplines Correct?

Is your preferred method of receiving information from the ASFMRA correct on your membership record? Make sure to check this out. Simply go to the ASFMRA Web site (, choose Update Profile at the very top of the page or use this direct link: click here, log in, from the drop down menu choose Modify My Record, click Go, and your information will appear. If you scroll down to the last section at the bottom, it will be “General Information”. In this section, it has two items listed which are:

► Exclude me from email distribution and
► Exclude me from e-news.

Both of these have two choices of Yes or No. If you mark yes on Exclude me from email distribution, you are indicating that you want all of your ASFMRA information sent to you via hard copy in the mail. If you choose this, you may miss out on educational promotions, etc. If you mark yes on Exclude me from e-news, you are indicating that you want the ASFMRA Ag News and Legislative News sent to you via hard copy in the mail. If you want to receive all the information available to you from the ASFMRA, please make sure to mark both of these as No.

Are your disciplines – areas you work – listed correctly on your membership record? Make sure it is and if it’s not, you can change this by simply going to the ASFMRA Web site (,  choose Update Profile at the very top of the page or use this direct link: click here, log in, from the drop down menu choose Modify My Record, click Go, and your information will appear. Scroll down to the fifth section – Disciplines. It will state: “Please indicate a percentage amount of work you do in each discipline listed. You MUST select at least one discipline. If you are retired or inactive, please select the discipline(s) from when you were active. Your total should add up to 100%.” Then the following three choices of disciplines are listed:

► Management
► Appraisal/Reviewer
► Consultant

Please indicate the percentage of your time that you spend in these areas. Example: If you spend 23% of your time doing management work, 5% of your time on appraisals, and 72% of your time consulting, you would indicate these percentages as: Management – 23, Appraisal/Reviewer – 5, Consultant – 72. Please note: If you have more than 10 percent of your time in appraisal, you must comply with the USPAP requirements from The Appraisal Foundation.

As a TAF sponsor, the ASFMRA is required to collect and report USPAP information to the Appraisal Foundation for all our members who indicate they do appraisal work. If you are an appraiser, it is very important you make sure the date you took the 15-hour USPAP course is correct. This is listed in the sixth section, just below Disciplines, as “Appraiser Information”. It has listed: “Appraisers only enter date 15-hour USPAP was taken:” and if we have a date on record for this, it will be listed. If no date is listed or if the date listed is incorrect, please update this.

Thank You for Your Generous Donations

We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to CoBank and H. Keith Crow, ARA for their generous donation to the Education Foundation in the amount of $300.

The Kentucky Chapter of the ASFMRA is extended a big THANK YOU for the Chapter’s donation in the amount of $500 in honor of James Reynolds. The Kentucky Chapter sent a letter stating: “James Reynolds is a charter member of Kentucky ASFMRA, August 29, 1949, and second Kentuckian to earn the ARA designation. The membership has long respected Mr. Reynolds for his professionalism, ethics, and dedication to high education standards for all appraisers. Over the years, he wrote demonstration reports for college classes; worked tirelessly on Chapter offerings, and the National meetings hosted by Kentucky. This gift is a small repayment for Jim Reynolds’ dedication to high education and appraisal standards.”

If you are not already aware, the Education Foundation is a non-profit organization formed to serve the professions of agricultural consulting, farm management, rural appraisal, and review appraisal through the development of educational programs for professional advancement. In addition, tax-deductible contributions such as CoBank, Keith Crow, and the Kentucky Chapter’s along with that of many other members, state Chapters, and corporate sponsors continue to help the Foundation to fund significant educational programs; continued maintenance, editing, and development of ASFMRA education; leadership development; and knowledge of agriculture.

Consider a contribution in one or a combination of the following areas:

 Donate your tax deductible item to the Auction by completing the Auction Donation Form or participate in the Auction at the Annual Meeting.
 Include a donation along with your dues invoice.
 Make an Annual gift or consider an Endowment.
 Encourage your Chapters to make a donation.
 Make a donation in Memory of or in Honor of a deceased fellow member.

These types of donations can be a great way to support the Education Foundation that has been beneficial to so many. Any expression of support is greatly appreciated, and as you know, your contribution is tax-deductible. Thank you!
