Structural Changes to Committee Service

In ten to fifteen short years, Generation Y will be in charge of ASFMRA!  GEN Y’s are currently 18 to 34 years of age.  As Baby Boomers retire, we will be replaced by GEN Y.  ASFMRA is assertively working to become an attractive and appealing home for younger professionals.  Here’s one positive adaptation that is being implemented this year—the number of members on National Committees is being reduced to allow smaller, more responsive, nimble committees the opportunity to develop.  Additionally, two GEN Y members are being seated on each committee to allow younger members to participate in the national committee process.
 
It is a proven observation that members who participate on a national level tend to be the most involved and active members within our organization.  Actively committed members benefit both Chapter and National organizations.  Inclusion of younger members on National Committees allows them to gain a level of exposure to the national organization which will cement their long term involvement and support.  Historically, members who have national committee experience tend to be our longest term, most supportive members.

Please don’t feel slighted by being ‘retired’ from a national committee.  Your fellow ASFMRA members greatly appreciate all the service you have given to our organization!  As you retire from a committee, you are giving a young person the opportunity to build the relationships and knowledge base that you enjoy.  This process affords the opportunity to train ASFMRA’s future leaders and to allow GEN Y to learn lessons from seasoned leaders.  Sometimes, membership on a national committee has become a ‘life sentence’.  That tradition needs to change so that as we enter committee service, we have an expectation of our commitment’s time frame.  Cycling our many talented members through committees provides the committees with continual exposure to new creative ideas.  Your leadership team is working hard to prepare ASFMRA for the next generation!  Thanks so much for the time and service you have so graciously contributed to ASFMRA!

US tops still light wine market, overtakes Italy

In a watershed for the global wine industry, the U.S. overtook Italy in 2011 to become the largest single still light wine market. According to the IWSR, still light wine sales in the U.S. reached 300.6m cases in 2011, a rise of 4.2 percent over 2010. Meanwhile, the Italian market declined by 1.2 percent to 297.3m cases. France also continued its long-term decline, falling by 0.8 percent to 271.6m cases.

Publications Survey Results

A huge thanks goes out to all of you who contributed to our data collection by taking the 2012 Publications Survey. For those of you who love data please feel free to download the results from the survey (33 pages). ASFMRA publications rated high in general. Here are some things that we found out:

• Even though a good share of you all have smart phones and/or tablets, only 12% are reading the E-News on their phones or tablets
• Ag News is slightly more well-read than the Legislative News
• 28% of members would find a membership directory app useful
• 80% of members use the website to look up course info instead of the education catalog

• You can still view and/or print the entire newsletter from the web page. Just click on READ this newsletter on the ASFMRA website in the left column Quick Links. Or when you go to read more on a specific article will be taken to the entire newsletter, just need to scroll up or down.
• You should not have to log into Member Resources to read the newsletter. It is no longer behind the login Member Resource pages. You do need to login to download Kiplinger or LandOwner. Because of our contracts with Kiplinger and LandOwner we need to keep these publications behind the login/members only part of the website.

Getting Ready for ‘LifeStyle Agriculture’ … the Next Revolution in Agriculture

The last few years have been termed the “Golden Age of Agriculture” as the financial conditions in the agricultural industry have been the best in modern times.  Yet major changes in consumer expectations and lifestyles during the next generation will create more opportunities for agriculture than at any time in history.  Healthcare, energy and ecology will all be driven by the “new” agriculture, an agriculture that is highly technical but also very “soft” as plants, animals and people all merge in ways never dreamed. In his presentation, ‘How Agriculture Dominates 21st Century Economics’, Lowell Catlett, keynote speaker at the AgroNomics, Vision 2013 Conference this Fall, will introduce attendees to the next revolution in agriculture…LifeStyle Agriculture.

In his presentation, Dr. Catlett will talk about the strength and size of the U.S. economy and the agricultural sector as well as the growth potential of agriculture worldwide. How will healthcare, energy and ecology be dominated by agriculture in the future? What exactly is LifeStyle Agriculture and what does it mean to the agricultural industry?

Dr. Lowell Catlett is the Regents Professor in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business and Extension Economics and Dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University. He is an exciting and highly entertaining futurist who promises to deliver a thought provoking outlook on the future of global agriculture. You don’t want to miss this session at the Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. Dr. Catlett is scheduled to speak at the closing session Friday, November 2nd at 10:45 a.m.

IL Chapter Offers Using Excel in Specified Appraisal Applications

August 15, Champaign, IL

For the beginner to advanced user, this seminar will move attendees from basic spreadsheet concepts to advanced analytical techniques. Everyone will pickup hints and techniques for adding graphics, formatting and debugging. Participants will be able to use Excel appropriately in each of the approaches and gain objective mathematical tools for adjustments. Appraisers and managers will learn to compare sales using soils data, land-use mix and building mix through automated scoring. World’s Premier Soil Survey Laboratory Named After Soil-Pioneer Charles Kellogg

LINCOLN, Neb., June 4, 2012 — On Monday, the National Soil Survey Laboratory was named after Dr. Charles E. Kellogg, an American pioneer of soil science who was instrumental in bringing a national focus on the value of soil data for the public good.

In a dedication ceremony at the laboratory in Lincoln, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Deputy Undersecretary for Natural Resources and the Environment, Ann Mills, spoke about Kellogg’s remarkable career dedicated to helping land users conserve and improve America’s natural resources by better understanding the Nation’s soils.

Kellogg achieved one of the most distinguished careers in the history of soil science and made a significant and lasting impact on the soil survey program of USDA by redirecting and refining its mission during his more than three decades of leadership.

“It seemed only fitting, that the world’s premier soil survey laboratory have a name synonymous with our mission,” said Jon Hempel, Director of the National Soil Survey Center. “Dr. Kellogg represents our commitment to providing leading soil analysis for the benefit of the land user and the Nation as a whole.”

The Kellogg Laboratory is part of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) National Soil Survey Center, and is the primary source for the Nation’s soil information. It also maintains one of the largest archives of soil samples in the world and employs a team of leading soil analysts to provide technical assistance for a wide range of planning issues affecting both farm and nonfarm uses as well as homeland security needs.

Joining for the dedication was Stephen Kellogg, the grandson of the late Dr. Kellogg, numerous state and local officials and representatives for Nebraska Senators, Ben Nelson and Mike Johanns.
